Artist Statement
In my waterscape and wildlife images, I try to capture the beauty and spiritual magnificence of nature. My photographs represent a moment in time through unique, natural settings and the amazing personalities of wildlife. I am particularly interested in how nature can calm people’s minds while they take a “time out” from their own hectic, busy lives. - read less -

Photography Approach
I frequently find that spending time observing and photographing nature turns into a spiritual experience. Nature is amazing and I count my blessings every time the opportunity to take a photo of wildlife presents itself. Spending time in nature is an integral part of my life. I schedule visits to outdoor locations on a regular and frequent basis. I not only write and lecture about the positive health benefits of time in nature, I live it as well. Whether it’s drifting along in my kayak photographing a great blue heron on a shoreline, taking a picture of an owl in a tree while hiking a trail, or having my camera ready near flowers that attract hummingbirds, I always feel better—better both mentally and physically. - read less -

Camera Gear
In my photography classes, I talk about using the right camera for the assignment at hand. The idea is to have camera choices for flexibility. So, when I am in the field looking to freeze the action of an osprey with a fish in its talons approaching a nest with wings wide open or working at capturing a hummingbird photo whose wings flap as many as 50 to 80 times per second, I use my Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II. This model is the Olympus flagship camera and for me, its speed, features, and outstanding lenses makes it perfect for wildlife photography.
However, when out on the water paddling a kayak, I reach for my less expensive Nikon Coolpix P510, a lightweight camera in the super-zoom family. Other times, I might select my small Sony point and shoot camera for its panorama ability and ease of use. And I even have snapped some pretty cool images with my cell phone. After all, it is not the camera that is the most important thing, in the end it is the photo. - read less -

Photography as Art
I am always humbled when invited to exhibit my nature photographs. I see each invitation as an opportunity to inspire people to appreciate the nature around them. My photographs have been exhibited at art shows with the Northport Arts Coalition, the Good Ground Artists out of Hampton Bays, the Islip Arts Council, the Art League of Long Island, Levittown Library, Sachem Library, Connetquot Library, Half Hollow Hills Library, and East Islip Public Library among others. And I am especially honored when a person purchases one of my photos—I wonder if they see nature as art or the art of nature? - read less -

Photo Printing
Printing images from my camera shots is a process that starts with formatting and preparing the file to selecting the best print size for the image. In my studio, I use a large format Epson photo printer, archival inks and papers. Often I use luster paper for its beauty when framed, but I also print on select specialty and fine art papers. Since I care so deeply for my prints, I control the entire process from image preparation to printing and photo matting to framing. While I enjoy the natural look of my photographs, I do on occasion, enhance the images in the digital darkroom using a variety of software including, Photoshop, Lightroom, Affinity Photo, and Nikon View NX2. - read less -

Kayak Tours
I offer 2 types of kayak tours in association with the Carman’s River Canoe & Kayak shop located on Montauk Highway in Brookhaven, NY.
The Kayak Photography Tour is a 4 or 6 hour one-on-one trip down the lower tidal portion of the Carman’s River in my tandem kayak. Starting at the shop, we put-in and paddle down the river which flows through the Wertheim U.S. Wildlife Refuge. Depending on the season, the tide, the time of day, and the luck of the moment, I’ll bring you into known wildlife locations that are acquired after 15 years of experience paddling the Carman’s. This includes the creeks and backwater areas off the main river where egrets and great blue heron spend time feeding and where the American bald eagle nest is located. These are places where sightings of osprey, belted kingfishers, green herons, deer and raccoons are possible, never mind assorted turtles basking on down logs. While searching out wildlife, we also discuss camera settings, lens choices, photo composition, best ways to frame a subject, and the challenge of photographing birds in flight.
The 4 hour Naturalist Kayak Tour was developed for folks looking to discover the lower portion of the Carman’s River not just paddle it. During this small group tour, we spend time paddling and discussing the natural aspects of the river including the geographic details of the glaciers that formed the waterways of Long Island, as well as the importance of the river’s wetlands. We look to identify wildlife while I discuss wildlife behavior and fun facts. We identify flora, as well as some of the special trees that dot the shore. As we paddle near areas of note, I discuss the historic aspects of the river including the duck farms of old, the Native American use of the river and how it was utilized by both sides during the American Revolutionary War, the Wertheim Refuge, and much more.
